What is keratoconus?
Keratoconus is a progressive eye disorder in which the normally round, dome-shaped cornea becomes thin and cone-shaped and bulges out a little.
The condition usually affects both eyes, but it can be worse in one than the other. It usually starts in the late teenage years or early twenties.
I know many of you might be searching for keratoconus treatment in Lahore! Let me tell you, there is no cure for keratoconus, but there are treatments that can help to improve vision.
Keratoconus treatment cost in Pakistan depends on the severity of the problem. You need to consult keratoconus treatment doctors in Lahore, for more personalized information.
What causes keratoconus?
Keratoconus is a condition in which the cornea (the outermost layer of the eye) becomes thin and cone-shaped.
Here’s what you need to know about causes! It is caused by a breakdown in the normal structure of the collagen in the cornea. This can cause the cornea to become weak and distorted.
OTHER potential causes include genetics, eye rubbing, and certain illnesses.
There are several possible causes of keratoconus which are as follows:
- Genetic predisposition
- Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light
- Prolonged eye injuries or diseases
Let me tell you, there is no known single cause of keratoconus, but it appears to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
Signs and Symptoms to notice!
The most common symptom of keratoconus is blurred or distorted vision. Other symptoms may include:
- Eye fatigue
- Headaches
- Sensitivity to light
- Difficulty seeing at night
- Difficulty wearing contact lenses
- Corneal bulging appears
- Increased sensitivity to light occurs
- Blurred or distorted vision starts to happen
Apart from the preceding signs and symptoms which may tell you to consult a doctor, most people with keratoconus have irregular astigmatism as well,
It then becomes difficult to correct with glasses or contact lenses. In more advanced cases, the cornea may bulge so much that it interferes with the normal movement of the iris.
This can further cause irregular pupil dilation and light sensitivity as well.
The treatment you can opt for!
The most common treatment for keratoconus is wearing contact lenses or keratoconus treatment with vitamins. These are keratoconus treatments without surgery.
Alternatively, surgery may be an option for some people with keratoconus. Here’s what the available options are:
- In the case of mild to moderate keratoconus, the treatment plan can be done with glasses or contact lenses, but this would be a long-term treatment. Thus, not recommended if you are looking for quick treatment.
- In the case of an instant solution, CXL (corneal cross-linking surgery) is a procedure in which the cornea is strengthened with corneal collagen cross-linking. Cross-linking costs in Pakistan vary from person to person.
